BAIL HEARING SET FOR TODAY FOR DEFEDE IN GARMENT CENTER EXTORTION CASE

NEW YORK — Joseph (Little Joe) Defede, the alleged acting boss of the Luchese crime family, who was charged Tuesday along with 11 other men with extortion of garment firms, has a date in court today.
Defede is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. in Magistrate’s Court for a detention hearing. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office said Defede’s attorney will probably ask the court to release Defede on bail, “and we will oppose.”
“The other defendants have either posted bail or are expected to post bail,” the spokesman said.
As reported, Daniel Rizzo, Michael Vuolo, Oscar (Little O) Ansourian, Sidney Lieberman, Irwin Schlacter and John Munro are charged with racketeering in an indictment that was unsealed on Tuesday.
The indictment charges the defendants with committing nine separate acts from 1991 to 1996 on behalf of the Luchese crime family involving extortion of legitimate garment center businesses.
The U.S. Attorney claims mobsters extorted $2.5 million, or an average of $360,000 to $480,000 a year.
