Hollywood was obsessed with ray guns and death rays long before lasers were invented. In "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers," the ray guns disrupted the saucers' magnetic fields, causing them to crash--a death ray by any other name. Then again, the saucers used retractable death rays to vaporize buildings, tanks, people, etc...
