Police chief: 'drug trafficking just keeps going'
April 28, 2020

The corona crisis does not affect the activity of drug smugglers, says Fred Westerbeke, the recently appointed chief of the Rotterdam police in Algemeen Dagblad. In the port of Rotterdam, the police even notice more drug smuggling activity than usual. Over forty suspected henchmen have been arrested in the last six weeks, people who break open certain containers in port areas to transport unseen drug packages.

Fred Westerbeke sees this as an indication that international drug trafficking is simply continuing.

A batch of cocaine was also intercepted to England among medical supplies.

Furthermore, the police receive far more reports of drug deals or suspicious circumstances than usual, because they are more noticeable because of the rest on the street. The police see the movement of street trade from locations where it is normally busier to supermarket parking lots and hardware stores, places where quite a few people still gather.
