21 years have passed since the massacre of San Basilio di Vittoria. On January 2, 1999, inside the bar of the Esso petrol station on the SS 115 Vittoria-Comiso, shortly after sunset, a mafia commando killed 5 people.

The target of the "commando" were Angelo Mirabella, referent of Vittoria's "Stidda" clan, Rosario Nobile, and Claudio Motta, believed to be affiliated with the Dominante clan but to be riddled with gunshots were also two Vittoria football fans , 28 year old Rosario Salerno and 27 year old Salvatore Ottone. Only the bartender who hid behind the counter was saved and was spared by the hit men.

Only in January 2013 was the truth about the massacre reconstructed: it was ordered by the Piscopo and Emmanuello Cosa Nostra clans of Gela, rivals of the "Stidda", who thus intended to extend their dominance also in the province of Ragusa.

In the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista in Vittoria, a mass will be celebrated to remember the innocent victims of that massacre, Salvatore Ottone and Rosario Salerno. The religious function will be officiated by Don Salvatore Cannata.
