“Albert” is one and the same as “Individual 1,” according to Sheehan’s affidavit. Though the court records aren’t clear, convicted loan shark Albert Calvanese is believed to have controlled a chunk of the local rackets for years, law enforcement sources have said.

Calvanese, 56, of Springfield, is regarded as a smart, stealthy and dangerous gangster who eludes law enforcement by keeping his schedule unpredictable and his interactions covert.

He was last prosecuted in 2006 for beating a mortgage broker who owed him a debt while the broker wore a state police wire. The broker also sought law enforcement help out of sheer terror, state police said at the time.
