If what some people are saying is true and he had his eyes gouged out etc. then that's absolutely inexcusable on the part of whoever did it.

Shooting someone is one thing but at least it's an impersonal and perfunctory method of killing another criminal. Gouging etc. is more like what a serial killer with bad brain wiring would do.
