What O'Brien and Kurins did wasn't honorable. O'Brien's and Kurins' actions don't really reflect negatively on the investigation into Castellano. The two things aren't mutually exclusive.

O'Brien and Kurins writing that book was extremely controversial and basically everyone in the bureau thought it would set a bad precedent in terms of agents looking to make money profiting off similar investigations and giving mobsters an inside look as to how Feds conduct their investigations.

Not sure what they lied about. AFAIK conversations were taken verbatim, some were just not entirely relevant to the investigation.

And Gravano wrote about Castellano's penile implant too. It's funny!
