The mafia was designed for the families to work together. A lot of them intermarried, forming alliances that lasted generations. Some members of separate families are still bound together this way. Maybe this is what Bonanno warned about. Once money takes hold over tradition, inevitably the familial bonds that made their thing unique from other criminal organizations would give way to self interest and ultimately disassembly.
