I'm assuming they have members on the outside and it was to gain power and connections within the prisons and legal/law system


Not to bring Hollywood into this but in the movie Blood in Blood out the Mexican prison gang leader doesn’t want to get into drugs but the others know that the money, power and influence the other gangs would derive from drugs would get them crushed if they didn’t also go after it. So they had their own leader killed.
