It could have made for some great story lines. Maybe DiMeo trying to hold onto power and running things from the inside and the guys out on the street resisting.
Instead we got story's about Meadow's Puerto Rican or black boyfriends and her fat roommate pulling her hair out.
Gotta appease the female demographic (in the most dumbed-down way possible).
