During the 1920s, Guzik served as Capone’s chief accountant and treasurer, and as such he was a very confident man. He’d walk around without a gun and always carried at least $1,000 in his pocket. After all, who was going to mess with Scarface’s accountant?
As Capone’s treasurer, Guzik was the guy who took care of the bribes. If a judge needed to be bought off or a police commissioner needed a few extra bucks, Guzik would count out a couple of bills, earning him the nickname “Greasy Thumb.” However, being the man in charge of the money isn’t always a good thing.
