Vito Genovese fled to Italy in 1937, one step ahead of a NYC murder rap. He brought a lot of cash with him and got tight with Mussolini's son in law. In 1943, as a favor to Mussolini, he ordered the murder of Carlo Tresca, a left-wing journalist, in NYC; the shooter allegedly was Carmine Galante. He switched sides after the Allied invasion of Sicily.

No one was ever indicted, much less convicted, of Siegel's murder. But, most think it was because the cost of the Flamingo Hotel soared past $5 million, vs.the $1 million it was expected to cost; and Siegel and/or his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, were suspected of embezzling the money. What is known is that almost immediately after he was killed, two big-time gamblers with Mob connections, Little Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum, showed up at the Flamingo and claimed it.
