Very doubtful that Gambino and Joe Colombo were like father/son and best friends. Whether or not Don Carlo had something to do with Joe's death is a good debate.
I heard a theory that once Colombo's thing gained steam, he wanted Joe to use his influence to help Italian mainland mafia members somehow. I assume Joe didn't obey and that is the reason he got whacked..... Reason being, why didn't Don Carlo stop him earlier? Carlo probably had a deal in place to release jailed mainland members if he stopped Colombo's public rising. So Carlo made it look like he didn't want the attention to LCN but secretly had a side scheme already planned.
