I saw Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers at several Alan Freed shows at the Brooklyn Paramount in the Fifties, and met them outside at the stage door. Frankie was beloved by his fans: he was a cute little adolescent who was just like us--he went to junior high in New York City; his English teacher supposedly let him write a song ("Why Do Fools Fall in Love") instead of an essay; his voice hadn't changed yet....Too bad: he was the first famous R&R star to die of a drug overdose.
