From what I've learned, the media usually holds on to stories when they're protecting somebody. When they don't like someone, and especially when they have something big, they want to release it as soon as they can. They want to get the big scoop before another paper does, since it can mean getting a Pulitzer Prize. That's what happened with Watergate.
