Same old residual bitterness over a person of Irish Catholic descent being elected President.
He hardly needed help getting elected over Nixon.
It's common knowledge he destroyed Nixon in the debates and was favored among large, less bigoted, pockets of voters.
The mob did probably get him and his brother killed though.

It was one of the closest elections in history. Catholicism had nothing to do with it. Joe Kennedy made a deal with the mob. JFK won Illinois by the slimmest of margins.
