Republicans are notorious for dishing out tough love whenever someone that's not close to them is a victim of some type of bigotry or harassment, yet suddenly turning into revolutionaries when it happens to one of their own. The guy who started the campaign in California to release non violent drug offenders was an admitted right wing Republican who believed in throwing away the key, until his son got busted. And now his mission is becoming a reality. Reformed Republicans, as it were, lol, are the best allies progressives have. They know the system. They know where to attack it.
