I'm sure people who joined the police back then came from dirt poor backgrounds too.

There is an in built animus towards authority from certain people. That's one of the biggest factors.

Besides, Carmine Persico and Sammy Gravano are just two gangsters whose parents worked like dogs to give them a good life; Persico's father was a stenographer!

Carmine even destroyed his own son's life by getting him involved, when he was capable of so much more.

Guys like Frank Costello could've used their brains to become legitimate but they were just too damn greedy.
