U.S. Border Patrol agents at the San Clemente checkpoint on the I-5 arrested a man Tuesday night after discovering $204,620 worth of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment in his car.

The agents found six bundles of cocaine weighing 16 pounds, a statement from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

The 28-year-old suspect, who is a U.S. citizen, was driving a 2008 Nissan Sentra when he was selected for an extra inspection upon his 7:20 p.m. arrival to the checkpoint.

A K-9 alerted the agents after sniffing around the car. The drugs were found in cellophane wrapped packages inside the secret compartment, which was built into the rear speaker partition.

The vehicle was seized by the border patrol.

The checkpoint is operated by the agency's San Diego office. Agents confiscated 1,700 pounds of cocaine worth $22 million last fiscal year.
