The Upper East Side was historically old money with lots of snobs (save for Yorkville and, of course, East Harlem). But a few years ago the property values on the west side surpassed the east side for the first time since they've been keeping score.

It's no surprise, though. Manhattan has become a destination for the moneyed. They don't care where it came from, mind you. Old money, new money, whatever clears the bank. But big money just the same. Anyway, as a result of that, the traditional demographics has been turned on its ears. Downtown property values are insane today. Thirty years ago when you thought of the West Village you thought of Washington Square Park, starving artists, and junkies doing the nod on park benches. Today you think Hollywood East.

To be honest, I liked it better the old way.
