"Marty" was originally meant to be a tax loss for Lancaster and his company. They were going to start filming and then just walk away from the project and take a tax deduction. The tax laws were changed that year and that deduction was no longer allowed. For them to take a deduction the movie would have to be released and shown in a theater. Lancaster's company then finished filming and the rest is history.
