They tried to take down Joseph at his clothing store in Old Montreal but it got botched and he escaped. He still walks around freely and i've seen him at Greek restaurants, so he doesn't take as much precaution as he should considering his past.
Gallo was Calabrese and he didn't show enough loyalty. It might partially be his fault that Nick Sr. got taken out since he was once a "mediator" between rival clans, hence the revenge hit.

I agree, I think Gallo pulled a Di Maulo and backed the take over attempt and Vito is punishing those involved hence all the hits.
