Prior convictions should not be considered in sentencing.
If a criminal is incarcerated for a crime and serves his time then he should be considered punished and his debt paid to society.
Considering precious transgressions for current sentencing (which this judge did) is repunishing him for crimes he has already paid his due. In effect punishing him twice.

Lets call a spade a spade: he was convicted on gambling (poker machines). 16yrs is a joke.
