Last night John Mayberry entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 7th inning, and remained in the game. He ended up hitting a tenth inning homer to tie the game and an eleventh inning grand slam to win it.

It was the 6th time in mlb history that a player hit two extra inning homers in the same game. The last time was in 1987 when Mike Young of the Orioles did it. Before that the speedy Ralph Garr, not known for homers, did it in '73, and Art Shamsky did it for the Reds in '66. I had previously heard about Shamsky's game. Like Mayberry, he entered the game late, but he also hit a homer before extra innings, giving him three for the game.

Mayberry's second homer marked the first time that one of the two homers was a grand slam.
