It's one thing to abide by local laws/customs no matter how ridiculous and make movies that are within those laws or customs for that market.

But Chinese censors are so thorough and aggressive that they are starting to impact what movies the rest of us see. Much like the auto companies, who are making car models based on Chinese preferences, Hollywood is producing product that will sell in Beijing. Remember the Red Dawn remake that had North Koreans, instead of Chinese, invading the US?

Business is business. The talent in Hollywood tends liberal. But management does not. The focus is on making money. Whatever best accomplishes that is what they're gonna do. And if that means your film must pass the approval of a Communist functionary , then that is what's going to happen. In other news, water is wet... rolleyes If pushed Hollywood would likely submit to the same restrictions in the US.

Quote:
One production currently facing scrutiny is Disney and Marvel’s “Iron Man 3,” parts of which were filmed in Beijing in the last month. It proceeded under the watchful eye of Chinese bureaucrats, who were invited to the set and asked to advise on creative decisions, according to people briefed on the production who asked for anonymity to avoid conflict with government or company officials. Marvel and Disney had no comment.

Co-productions like “Kung Fu Panda 3” draw close monitoring by the censors at every step. Scripts are submitted in advance. Representatives of S.A.R.F.T., according to Mr. Cohen and others, may be present on the set to guard against any deviation. And there is an unofficial expectation that the government’s approved version of the film will be seen both in China and elsewhere, ..

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
