Not seen it but I wouldn't be surprised if "filler" is the problem. Remember COMA was originally a (quite decent) 2 hour movie (based off a 300 page book), so you have to add alot of filler to make it a 4 hour mini-series. I felt this same problem when these same producers made their ANDROMEDA STRAIN some years back.

COMA is fascinating in that the original novel was written by Robin Cook, an Ivy League doctor who became a best-selling novelist. COMA was adapted for the movies by director Michael Crichton, who also was an Ivy League doctor who also became a best-selling novelist in his own right.
