As you probably know, in 1968 JLennon did call a meeting of Apple executives and other Beatles to make the important announcement that he was Jesus Christ. This came to him during an LSD trip the night before. Right after the announcment one of the execs abruptly called a lunch break. During his peacenik phase, he most likely saw himself in some kind of messianic role. On the other hand, he was always changing his views so it's kind of hard to tell where his head was at.
Drugs can be a bitch.
EDIt - reminds me of when Nixon and other government figures truely feared Lennon for his voting influence with anti-war youth and made the FBI investige him with the full (expensive) fireworks. Except the observing FBI agents reported that Lennon effectively was too stoned to be a threat.
Wait a minute. Not that it's either here nor there, BUT as I recall, Lennon said that "The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ." I remember the buzz that remark started but I don't recall him saying he WAS Jesus Christ.
