Here we go again from the Land of the World's Stupidest Criminals (and most shameless defense lawyers):

Michael Poyner was sentenced to 16.5 years in prison today. Seems he was firing his shotgun randomly in front of his home. Deputies ordered him to drop it. He leveled the gun at a deputy, who shot him. Poyner recovered, and was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and other felonies. As a "mitigating factor," his lawyer said he had "undiagnosed mental issues at the time of the shooting and had attempted to deal with them by getting drunk." tongue

Patrick Ellis, a process-server for a local firm, was sentenced to two years' probation for failing to serve 13 summonses on drivers who ignored photo radar speeding tickets, and falsifying paperwork to show that he did deliver them. His lawyer offered as a "mitigating factor": "He wasn't trying to make a personal profit--it was just that people don't like to be served with speeding tickets." tongue
