The final scene was shot in close-up and long range. They obviously decided to go with the long range shot of Andy and Red reuniting on the beach, but Frank Darabont has said over the years that he'll eventually release the close-up ending as an extra on an annivesary edition of the dvd/blue-ray. But I'm not holding my breath. I'd really LOVE to see it, though.

The novella's ending was more ambiguous, but this is one instance where the film's ending worked better with an improvisation by the director.
