Both English and French media based in Quebec are reporting today that the interception of BlackBerry messages between Raynald Desjardins and Vittorio Mirarchi (another co-accused) was instrumental in the Montagna murder investigation. One radio station in Montreal actually states that retrieval of messages from Montagna's BlackBerry was helpful.

Sûreté du Québec investigators accessed BlackBerrys: report
BY JAN RAVENSBERGEN, THE GAZETTE
JANUARY 5, 2012 9:07 AM

MONTREAL – A spokesperson for Quebec’s provincial police Thursday morning refused to confirm or deny a media report that investigators obtained access to a series of encrypted BlackBerry messages during their probe into the Mafia-style slaying of Salvatore Montagna.

“We do not reveal our investigation methods,” Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Ronald McInnis said.

No spokesperson for Research in Motion (RIM), which operates the Blackberry smartphone service, could immediately be reached at company headquarters in Waterloo, Ont., to confirm if a court order was involved or if the company co-operated.

Warrants for interception of communications in the Montagna case remained sealed.
