You are right, Jimmy. Bookmaking is kind of looked upon as a harmless crime. I might say it´s even accetable. But when violence comes in to the picture, it´s a different tune.
The same could be said about the booze racket during the prohibition. The cops often chose to look the other way (and fed their pockets of course) when it came to bootlegging.
