greatest argument - became boss at a very young age, I think he held sitting boss title for the longest out of anyone in NYC ever, defacto head of the commission when it was stacked with legends, not greedy and had a lot of guys very loyal to him, locking down Montreal

worst argument - naming his son consigliere, making his son in general, pissing off everyone with his book and giving Guliani fuel for the commission case, plotting to kill Lucchese et.al. and causing a huge rift in just about every family

thoughts?

While he was boss, he was extremely good and was well liked by the other bosses. Even Lucchese spoke well of him in the beginning. It's also important to note that no other NY boss had a longer run than Joe Bonanno and there is a very good reason for that. Unlike many of the other bosses, he wasn't driven by power and greed. He was very much into the old way of thinking. Loyalty, family and honor was everything you needed to know about Joe Bonanno. The amazing thing is the family didn't have a rat until Frank Coppa in 2002, the same year Bonanno died. Of course he was no longer in the picture at that point, but the family was built by Joe Bonanno and carries his name to this day. No, he wasn't a perfect boss and definitely made his share of mistakes. The worst thing he did as boss was appoint his son as consigliere, but the irony is it was probably the best thing he ever did for himself. That and pissing off Carlo Gambino. If that hadn't happened, Joe Bonanno would've gone down in the commission case with Fat Tony and the rest. Maybe even sooner. Instead, the man outlived everybody. He died a free man and a wealthy man at the incredible age of ninety seven.

How dare you talk about my woman like that.
