Genovese mobster Palumbo sentenced to 10 years

Genovese crime family soldier and acting captain Anthony “Tony D” Palumbo was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday in Manhattan federal court. Palumbo pleaded guilty last year to murder conspiracy in aide of a racketeering enterprise which included a plot to kill a hit man in the Russian mafia. According to authorities Palumbo controlled mob crews in both New Jersey and Brooklyn and in 1990 he was placed in charge of the families interest in an illegal mafia cartel that extorted petroleum companies affiliated with the Russian mafia.

The Russian mob ran a motor fuel bootlegging operation where petroleum companies evaded state and federal excise taxes and in turn mafia families including the Genovese family extorted their shares of the proceeds. Then in 1992-93 Russian mobsters involved in the scheme with Palumbo asked him and others to kill a hit man who was working for them. Palumbo and the other mobsters agreed to make the hit but the upper level leadership of the Genovese family would not authorize it so it never happened claim authorities.

Authorities additionally claimed that Palumbo was involved in the 1992 hit on a Genovese family associate named Angelo Sangiuolo. Sangiuolo was killed on the orders of then Genovese family boss Vincent “the Chin” Gigante because he had ripped off a gambling business being run by Palumbo. Palumbo complained to Gigante about Sangiuolo which lead to Gigante ordering mobster Angelo Prisco to murder Sangiuolo according to authorities. Prisco recruited two mob associates to carry out the hit and in June 1992 they shot and killed Sangiuolo in a van in the Bronx.

Preet Bharara the U.S. Attorney said in a statement “Anthony Palumbo’s decade long crime spree has finally come to an end , and he is going to prison which is exactly where he belongs.”
