Inglenook (and Almaden) pioneered the use of "varietal" wines (i.e., Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay) at a time when nearly all CA wines had "generic" labels (i.e., "Claret," "Rhine Wine," "Burgundy"). Under CA law, varietal wines must have a large majority of their content made from the grape variety listed on the label, whereas generic wines can have any mixture of any grapes. Inglenook's production of varietal wines did a lot to make people take CA wines seriously.

But, following the wine boom of the sixties, Heublein bought a big part of Inglenook and ran the name into the ground by making cheap, mass-produced wines at low prices. Coppola bought part of Inglenook's own vineyards and renamed them "Rubicon"--smart move considering how degraded Inglenook's name had become. It just doesn't make sense for him to rename it "Inglenook."
