They came to mourn a soldier and dear family friend.

They ended up behind bars.

Now, the Lowdens of Gratiot County find themselves in the midst of a legal battle that could strike down Michigan's 2006 funeral protest law -- hastily enacted in reaction to incendiary protests at military funerals by the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.

In the Lowdens' case, they weren't protesting the 2007 funeral. The family had invited them to attend. But they were pulled over for having a few handmade signs critical of the Bush administration in their van window as they drove in the funeral procession.
Funeral Protest Law Traps Mourners

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungleā€”as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
