When you crack your knuckles it releases a gas which in turn makes that popping sound. It does involve articulation of the joints to some extent, so that causes wear and tear of the knuckle joints. But that wear and tear is so tiny that it probably won't affect your chances of getting arthritis. Anyway, arthritis predisposition appears to be inherited to some degree.
