Olivant is 100% correct. The former mayor pled guilty to perjury/official misconduct charges.

There were rumors that Kilpatrick hosted a party at the official city mansion in which strippers/prostitutes performed. The state DA investigated and found no evidence of a party.

The local police also started investigating, much to Kilpatrick's displeasure. So Kilpatrick fired the cops who wouldn't back off.

Two of the cops were deputy chiefs. They sued for wrongful termination. They alleged the real reason for termination was that they stumbled across Kilpatrick's affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty.

Kilpatrick refused to settle and the case went to trial. In that trial both Kilpatrick and Beatty denied the affair; Kilpatrick denied ANY affairs.

The city lost the suit. But then Kilpatrick agreed to pay the cops MORE than the judgment. So the local papers started investigating and found that the cops had text message evidence that graphically and explicitly detailed a long adulterous relationship between Beatty and Kilpatrick. (The two had gone to high school together, actually a cross town rival of MY old high school whistle )

The papers got their hands on some of the most lurid items and published them. The local DA, who is no friend of Kilpatrick, charged with him with various perjury and obstruction of justice counts. Other shady activities were also revealed. During all this Kilpatrick got into a shoving match with some cops who were trying to serve a subpoena on one of Kilpatrick's friends.

Even the governor, got involved because she had the sole power to remove a sitting mayor (civilly).

Finally Kilpatrick gave up and pled guilty. He did a little over 3 months in jail; he can't run for or serve in political office for 5 years, and has to pay back $1 million in restitution.

At this point most people are happy to see him gone. However he is an undeniably charismatic and energetic fellow. The issue that some folks have is that with the economy so bad it scarcely seems "fair" that a convicted perjurer can waltz into a sales job that pays a minimum of $100K and perhaps as much as $300/400K.

But life's not fair... ohwell

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungleā€”as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
