We have a Wal-Mart 10 minutes away and another about 20 minutes away. Both are Superstores.

Walmart wanted to buy the land where my church is, which sees a high volume of traffic. The church was seeking to move a mile away because it needs more room for its school, church building (It's a growing congregation) and gymnasium and multi-purpose center. Walmart agreed not only to pay fair market value for the property, but they also agreed to build state-of-the-art facilities for the church elsewhere.

Our local board of supervisors, which included owners of a grocery store and hardware store within a stone's throw of the church, denied Wal-Mart permission to build, so the deal fell through.
