The LPGA has required that athletes, participating in LPGA events, be able to speak English. Apparently, after two years foreign athletes will be given a brief test to determine whether they can speak and understand the language. If not, they face possible suspension. This, interestingly enough, only became an issue after Korean athletes have been winning the events.

Anyway, I got a good laugh yesterday afternoon, listening to two ESPN analysts on radio discussing that it is not too much to ask foreign athletes to "conversate" intelligently. One also used the word "irregardless."

Now I know some dictionaries list the word conversate as a corrupt form or slang for converse, but its use in this context washilarious. Before we require that foreigners speak the language or suffer a pecuniary loss, maybe we should require the naturally born Americans, particularly those earning a living by speaking through major media outlets, to learn the language.
