Forty shopping carts, worth $500, were stolen from Town and Country Market at 1605 Calumet Ave.
Police said a man had given a shelf stocker a card identifying himself as an employee of "Quality Smart Cart Service" in Gary and told her he would be back to pick up some damaged carts. A store manager, however, told police the man had no authority to take the carts.
