Remember, this is 15-17 years after we see Young Clemenza in GF II. He's not a cocky street punk leading Vito around any more - Vito is the boss, and he knows it. Remember Clemenza talking to Vito in the den in GF I, when Michael announces the move to Vegas? Very formalized and subservient. I think Clemenza probably would indeed talk like this, if he was breaking bad news to Vito about Sonny.
