Nederhop is the umbrella term for a musical style from the Netherlands, which is based on American hip hop music . The music mainly consists of Dutch rap .
Although the first Dutch rappers usually wrote in the English language, this started to change when Osdorp Posse gained a large fan base. They were the first to record and release hip hop in the Dutch language, were the first to perform for large audiences and were the first to reach the charts with their albums.
In 1995, the same year that Osdorp Posse had a top 20 success with their album Afslag Osdorp , rapper Extince was the first Dutch rap artist to achieve a top 10 hit in the singles charts with Spraakwater .
Rapper Def Rhymz was the first rapper with number 1 hits such as Doekoe and Schudden, with a more pop, R&B and dance-oriented sound, Dutch hip hop has become the most popular storm of mainstream pop music in the Netherlands in the 21st century.
In 2024, the Dutch music streaming charts are dominated by Dutch-language rap artists such as Boef, Josylvio, Broederliefde, Lil' Kleine, Snelle and Sevn Alias.
