Bolivia has no seaport. The plan, according to Bolivian authorities, was to sail the shipment to Antwerp via Chile, Peru and the Panama Canal. The interception was made at Pisiga at the border crossing with Chile.

Three men have been arrested, one aged 50 and two aged 20. It concerns the drivers of the trucks.

Last January, 8.7 tons of cocaine were seized in Bolivia. That shipment was impregnated in wooden planks and was on its way to the Netherlands. This was the "largest drug seizure in the history" of the country, according to what they said in the national authorities at the time.

Bolivia is becoming increasingly important in the cocaine trade. A lot of cocaine goes from there on to Asia, Europe and North America.
