Surinamese police find 600 kilos of coke on plane bound for Amsterdam

The Surinamese police found almost 600 kilos of cocaine in a Surinam Airways plane bound for Amsterdam. The drugs were contained in seventeen boxes that were hidden in the engine room at the bottom of the cockpit, according to a special police drug unit.

Surinam Airways technicians received a report of "an irregularity" in the aircraft and investigated. After the drugs were found, the police's Combating International Drugs Team (BID team) was called in.

The plane was delayed for hours due to the discovery of the drugs, but eventually departed from Suriname's international airport.

Cooperation
A few days ago, the Netherlands and Suriname announced that they wanted to tackle drug smuggling together. Customs officers from both countries will follow training together and exchange information about smuggling methods.

Last year, the Netherlands intercepted 523 kilos of drugs from Suriname. A year earlier that was still 1,187 kilos.
