THE ZONE OF INTEREST

Trying to find Paradise surrounded by Hell. Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his family have all the amenities they need directly next to the deadliest concentration camp. The film explores the family rather than the atrocities that were carried out as nothing is displayed onscreen, merely suggested off. It studies the complete lack of apathy towards others, materialism, and of course politics. I'd never heard of or seen a trailer to this prior to it being nominated at this years Oscars. It looked decent enough from the trailer but after viewing it, I felt somewhat indifferent about it. Dealing with the subject matter, surprisingly nothing about it moved me from the performances to the story. In addition, a lot of the story is told through actions rather than relying on mundane dialogue, which again, if you're not engaged in the film, you're just watching a bunch of actors move around. 6/10
