The FBI did use him for blackbag jobs and did send him down south to surveil some of the civil rights leaders. There's a woman, I can't remember her name now, I'll have to look it up, who broke the story wide open and her stuff is interesting.
I had heard or read somewhere he went down to Mississippi for a job like that. It was the case depicted in the movie Mississippi Burning though the movie didn’t reference him. Don’t know how true that is though.
