THE WHALE

You've heard the hype surrounding Brendan Fraser and it's very much real and deserved. He puts together his absolute best performance and to say he's back would be a huge understatement! Fraser plays Charlie, an obese English teacher during his last week of life attempting to reconnect with his daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink). He's checked in and looked after by his friend Liz (Hong Chau), who also happens to be a nurse. In typical Aronofsky fashion the film is a downer (like REQUIEM FOR A DREAM level depression) but still poignant and powerful. Fraser is seen consuming food in practically every scene and his binge scenes are especially difficult to stomach as a viewer. However, underneath it all, there is a very real and powerful message of love and acceptance. Fraser will most definitely get at least an Oscar nomination but I daresay Sink and Chau are worthy as well and I have my finger crossed for Aronofsky to get a nod or possible win. 7.5/10
