Money they got from kidnapping , they invested in drug trade , they were still small back then , but after fall of Sicilian Mafia they were there to fill the void , also all of Italy were focused on Sicily & Sicilian mafia , that allowed 'Ndrangheta to grow almost untouched by law enforcement.


Some of the early drugtraffickers in the 90s moved themselves to Colombia and Venezuela guys like Salvatore Miceli, Roberto Pannunzi and Pasquale Cuntrera where they made first contact with the cocaine cartels.
More and more went there and now 'ndrangheta have drug brokers in these countries, typically in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.
