Like most long-running TV series, "Ray Donovan" started with an intriguing story line, held you in its grip for two or three seasons, and fell apart as it tried to keep going with ever-more improbable and uninteresting plots. I suppose it left room for a denouement: if GF III was "Death of Michael Corleone," this movie would be "Death of Mickey." But it is very slow-moving, with too many poorly paced flashbacks. As usual, Ray sustains multiple catastrophic injuries (ad walks or limps away from them) and kills multiple people (and gets away with them). Liev Schreiber wears one expression: terminally depressed. The big reveal is how Mickey ended up in prison for decades (and Ray's role in it, leading to an even more improbable guilt trip). Yes, there's space for a sequel, but I sure hope there isn't one.
