Pete, as you points out, the real Vatican Bank scandal provided an historical backdrop for FFC. To that, FFC added Michael's efforts to finally achieve the elusive Corleone legitimacy that he sought. His acquisition of Immobiliare would solidify that legitimacy and make the Corleones unassailable. He also probably wanted to hand that legitimacy off to Mary and Tony untainted by the Corleone's sordid history.
